And Oscar makes two

My nephew, Oscar Thomas Rees (picture 1), was born at 3:06am (New Zealand Daylight Time) on Thursday, weighing in at 7lb 7oz. Picture 2 is Oscar cuddled with his mother and his big sister Hazel. But enough about that because the authorities in Mali have confirmed the death of the country’s first Ebola patient - a two-year-old girl whose mother died in Guinea a few weeks ago. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said the child had travelled by a bus from Guinea through Mali, where she was to stay with relatives, and showed symptoms of the disease. Over 40 people known to have come into contact with her have been quarantined. The child’s symptomatic state during the bus journey is especially concerning, as it presented multiple opportunities for exposures, including high-risk exposures, involving many people.
